I spent a few days last week in Berlin. Before going, I’d heard that it was a very vegan-friendly city, and I’d searched a few places I wanted to try, but I wasn’t prepared for the amazing healthy scene all over the city!
We arrived on Sunday night, and discovered that there were no food shops open in the area we were staying. Our Airbnb host suggested ordering a takeaway … in a residential area on the outskirts of the city, I accepted the fact I wasn’t eating! However we were amazed at what we found on the German equivilant of Just Eat – so many healthy options. I ended up ordering some avocado sushi rolls, but there were so many other plantbased-friendly choices.
Berlin seemed to be very into organic food, and taking the tram, we passed fully organic supermarkets all the time. These are some of my favourite chains we found:
Organic supermarkets all over the city.
There were so many different plant milks and pick and mix wholegrains (the dream!)
They also had isles full of every kind of nut butter imaginable, raw pestos, fresh juices….
Another organic supermarket. The produce was beautiful, especially these squashes outside!
A completely vegan supermarket – it’s in the same building as The Bowl (a plantbased restaurant) and a totally vegan café so it’s a bit of a paradise!
I was particularly impressed by their chocolate isle (lot’s of raw chocolate) but I’d actually choose one of the organic supermarkets over Veganz as they had amazing fresh fruit and veggies.
I was a big fan of this café chain. I still can’t believe there’s a vegan café chain – I thought it was a one off but we found them everywhere. They have a great selection of smoothies and juices, lunch options like veggie and hummus wraps, coconut yoghurt Bircher muesli, and a great selection of raw cakes.
I only tried out one plantbased restaurant, as my boyfriend isn’t plantbased so we have to compromise on trips!
–The Bowl, Berlin–
I loved this place. It’s unusual to find somewhere plantbased, rather than vegan, and I loved this as their focus is on unrefined wholefoods and natural ingredients. They serve up an amazing selection of Buddha-bowl style lunches, as well as juices, smoothies, coffee and desserts.

We couldn’t say no to sweet potato wedges!
In general, Berlin is a great place if you’re plantbased or vegan. I was amazed that even the smallest cafés and restaurants had vegan options – even the airport! There’s lots of other places I didn’t get round to trying but I’d 100% recommend the city for anyone wanting to be surrounded by plantbased food options!
